Maintenance and Care Tips for Rail Weighbridges

    Rail weighbridges are widely used for railway freight weighing, especially in industrial environments such as mines, ports, steel plants, and power plants. They are exposed to frequent vehicle traffic and heavy axle loads. Regular maintenance is therefore important not only for extending equipment life but also for maintaining weighing accuracy and stability.

1. Keep the Track and Weighing Area Clean

    Rail weighbridges are installed directly on railway tracks. During long-term operation, coal dust, ore, mud, dust, and other debris can accumulate around the weighing system. If these materials enter the weighing structure or track gaps, they may affect the normal operation of weighing components.

    The weighing area, weighing rails, and surrounding tracks should therefore be cleaned regularly. Standing water and accumulated mud should also be removed promptly. Proper drainage should be maintained to reduce the risk of corrosion and electrical problems.

2. Regularly Check the Rails and Load Cells

    For rail weighbridges, track condition is an important factor affecting weighing performance. The alignment, level, joints, and fastening of the weighing rails and approach rails should be checked regularly to ensure that railway vehicles can pass smoothly through the weighing area.

    The load cells and their mounting components should also be inspected. Check whether the load cells are securely installed, whether cables are damaged, whether connections are loose, and whether the output signals are stable. For dynamic rail weighbridges, track switches and vehicle detection devices should also be checked regularly, as they play an important role in vehicle detection and the weighing process.

3. Check the Electrical System and Perform Regular Metrological Verification

    The junction boxes, signal cables, weighing indicators, and data acquisition equipment may be exposed to dust, moisture, temperature changes, and vibration in industrial environments. Regular inspections should therefore be carried out on electrical connections, equipment sealing, grounding, and lightning protection systems. Any water ingress, corrosion, or poor electrical connections should be addressed promptly.

    In addition, weighing performance should be regularly tested, verified, or calibrated according to the manufacturer’s requirements and applicable local metrological regulations. For automatic rail-weighbridges, OIML R 106 specifies different accuracy classes and corresponding maximum permissible errors to help ensure reliable measurement performance during long-term operation.

4. Pay Attention to Operating Conditions and Keep Maintenance Records

    During operation, railway vehicles should remain within the weighing capacity and operating speed range specified by the rail weighbridge manufacturer. Overloading, excessive impact, or excessive speed through the weighing area should be avoided.

    If weighing data becomes abnormal or unstable, the load cells should not be checked alone. The vehicle operating speed, track condition, weighing rail alignment, electrical system, and data acquisition system should also be inspected.

    For high-frequency applications such as mines, ports, steel plants, and power plants, it is recommended to maintain regular maintenance records covering the track, load cells, electrical system, and weighing performance. Continuous maintenance and record keeping can help identify potential problems early and keep the rail weighbridge operating reliably over the long term.
